Designer swimsuit store splashes down in Ardmore

Women on the hunt for standout swimwear are making their way to Ardmore Plaza where the first Main Line outpost of Shirley & Co. opened last month.

The third-generation family-owned retailer boasts “the largest year-round swimsuit selection in the Philadelphia area,” aiming to accommodate women of all sizes, shapes, tastes and budgets.

For fashion-forward women willing to drop $200 or more on a suit, there are luxury labels like Karla Colletto, La Perla, Roidal, Shan and Luxe.

Somewhat more conservative shoppers gravitate towards familiar, mid-range department store lines including Trina Turk, Carmen Marc Valvo, Ralph Lauren, La Blanca and Tommy Bahama, while trendier labels like Betsy Johnson, Vix (a Kardashian fave) and Juicy Couture appeal to teens and 20-somethings.

Suit sizes range from 2 to 22 and cup sizes run as high as E and F. Those who are less well-endowed are directed to a cabinet stocked with cleavage-enhancing “Bravo” pads. (There’s even a selection of suits for mastectomy patients.)

“We can fit anyone from age 13 and up – whether she’s interested in high fashion or something to swim in at the Y,” says store manager Danielle Krause. “We know our stock well and we’re very honest. If the suit isn’t right for you, we’ll tell you to take it off and we’ll keep looking.”

According to Krause, the season’s swimwear trends include retro styles (e.g. polka dots and funky prints), tankinis with skirted bottoms, monokinis (one pieces with cut-outs) and one-shoulder styles.

Sarongs begin around $25, beach cover-ups at $40, and swimsuits range from $70 to $345.

Sundresses, shorts, crushable sun hats, beach bags and trendy flip-flops round out Shirley & Co.’s resort offerings.

Auspiciously located next to a pool supply store and a travel agency on Greenfield Avenue, the Ardmore store is the company’s third; other locations are in Elkins Park and Newtown.
